Chicago Bears release preseason standout after Jeffery Simmons trade

At 5-2, and with quarterback Caleb Williams playing at an elite level, the Chicago Bears decided to take a massive swing. For two first-round picks and a fourth, the Bears acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons in a trade with the Tennessee Titans.

But with every addition comes a subtraction. To make room for Simmons, the Bears released defensive tackle Jamree Kromah, via NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

“Sources: The Bears are releasing DE Jamree Kromah,” Schultz wrote. “The 26-year-old was a preseason star and one of Chicago’s highest-graded defenders in each of the last two weeks. However, the Bears needed the roster spot after trading for Jeffery Simmons.”

Perhaps Chicago will try to sneak the defensive end back onto their practice squad. The team did add defensive back Josh Butler to that unit on Thursday. But someone had to go upon Simmons’ arrival. And Kromah happened to draw the short end of the stick.

The Bears entered their offseason with a clear need in the pass rush. But they didn’t make any drastic changes at that spot. Kromah was given an opportunity to make a name for himself and did, being included on Chicago’s initial 53-man roster.

The defensive end earned his spot on the team in part due to his explosive preseason. Kromah put up nine tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. He had the makings of a potential diamond in the rough.

But Kromah never got his opportunity during the regular season. He appeared in two games, making two tackles with one going for a loss.

Alongside Simmons’ arrival, the Bears are also welcoming Montez Sweat back from his two-game suspension. Austin Booker is ascending while Dayo Odeyingbo will soon return from injury. There seemingly was no longer room for Kromah.

But the Bears know the defensive end better than any team in the league. His time in Chicago is done for now. But if the team needs pass rush help once again, perhaps Kromah gets another call.
