Earlier today, the Chicago Bears announced that they were re-signing veteran linebacker Jack Sanborn on X . The Chicagoland native will return home after a brief one-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys and his former head coach, Matt Eberflus.

Where Will Jack Sanborn Fit In Chicago?

Sanborn will likely be a backup and special teamer in 2026. The Bears have already made numerous moves at linebacker this offseason, including re-signing De’Marco Jackson and signing Devin Bush, both of whom will start ahead of Sanborn in the depth chart this August.

Chicago also still has veteran linebacker TJ Edwards under contract, who served as the team’s mike linebacker when healthy last season. Unfortunately, Edwards dealt with lingering soft-tissue injuries in 2025 and fractured his fibula during the Bears’ playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, putting his availability for the start of next season in question.

Chicago is also missing other depth pieces in the linebacker core, like Noah Sewell, who tore his Achilles during the 2025 season, and will likely miss time during 2026. 2025 fourth-round pick, Ruben Hyppolite II, had little impact at the linebacker position last year and may be fighting for a roster spot.

Sanborn has been productive when he has played, recording 198 total tackles and 15 tackles for loss in four seasons. Realistically, he will replace Amen Ogbongbemiga, whom the Bears cut before free agency for cap savings. Sanborn’s contract is only for one year, making it a low-risk move for Chicago, giving it depth at linebacker and a potential core special-teamer.

End Of My Jack Sanborn Rant: A Fan Favorite Returns Home

Sanborn likely won’t be more than a role player in 2026, but the former 2022 undrafted free agent will finally have a chance to experience a winning season with the team that initially signed him. The Sandman, as fans call him, will also give fans a hometown hero to root for. All around, it is a solid depth signing that will give the Bears more competition come training camp.
