Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is turning heads.
After guiding the Bears to a fifth win in the past six weeks, and leading his fourth game-winning drive and fourth-quarter comeback of the season, even head coach Ben Johnson believes Williams has some “Houdini” like characteristics.
Johnson isn’t alone, as Williams’ Bears teammates are standing up and taking notice of his performance in the clutch, of late.
Williams was stellar in Sunday’s 24-20 win over the Giants, especially late in the game, finishing with 220 yards, on 20-of-36 passing with one touchdown, and adding 63 yards rushing and another score.
Veteran Bears safety Kevin Byard isn’t surprised by Williams’ late-game heroics.
“I’ve seen it too many times,” Byard said, via Chris Emma. “When the game is on the line and we need him to make a play, he has ice in his veins. I think it’s just the maturation, the growth that he’s been showing, and the greatness that he has. I mean, he thrives in those scenarios. He doesn’t flinch at all. We know if the game is close, he’s going to make it happen for us.”
In so many ways, Williams has made a major leap from a rookie season where he experienced significant growing pains while enduring a coaching change and a wildly inconsistent, rudderless offense.
Through the first 10 weeks of the 2025 season, Williams is also on pace to leave his mark on the Bears’ franchise record book.
After toppling the Giants, Williams remains on pace to become the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears franchise history, currently completing 60.8 percent of his passes for 2,136 yards with 13 touchdowns to four interceptions.
If Williams can keep this pace, he’ll finish the season with a franchise record 4,034 passing yards, along with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, quite the leap from his rookie campaign and perhaps a harbinger of expectations as he continues to develop and improve in head coach Ben Johnson’s scheme.
