Chicago Bears: Top 5 guards in free agency after Chiefs tag Trey Smith

The Chicago Bears were hoping offensive guard Trey Smith would be on the market when free agency started on March 12. However, the Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday they are applying the franchise tag on the star offensive guard.

The Bears were never guaranteed to land Smith if he the market, as he would have had much interest around the league after making his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2024.

1. Will Fries

At 26, Fries has played with the Indianapolis Colts since he was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. He’s appeared in 41 games and started 31. The former Penn State standout finished 2024 on injured reserve after suffering a fractured right tibia.

He earned an 86.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus before the injury.
