There are a host of things to keep a watchful eye on as the Kansas City Chiefs begin training camp, but perhaps none more so than the left tackle position.
After being problematic last year, the Chiefs think they have got some good options to fill Patrick Mahomes' blindside with free agent Jaylon Moore and rookie Josh Simmons.
There is a thought that Simmons, who is working his way back from injury, could be the starter, while others think that Moore, due to his four years in the league, will get first crack at it.
But for head coach Andy Reid, he just wants to see how it all plays out over the coming weeks.
“Yeah, you're going to look for the best guy to start with that can fill in that spot and we can have a little consistency there,” Reid said. “We didn't have that last year, so let's work at it and see what we come up with. We've got some good candidates for it, and we'll just see where it goes.”
The battle between Moore and Simmons is going to be an intriguing one, and if the Chiefs are honest with themselves, either player will separate themselves early in camp so they can get the full amount of reps with the starters.
Granted, life in the NFL doesn't always go smoothly, but with Moore and Simmons, the Chiefs have options at left tackle. With a combined 47 sacks allowed (including playoffs), the Chiefs' Achilles heel has been the offensive line play, and the doubts over its production are what the skeptics cling to.
There are a couple of candidates to start Week 1. Let's see who takes their chance.
