Chiefs Announce Trey Smith News After Leaving Colts Game

The Kansas City Chiefs went into halftime of their Week 12 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts trailing 14-9, despite a steady opening half from Patrick Mahomes. The quarterback threw for 117 yards at halftime, completing 14 of 21 of his passes. Mahomes appeared to have produced the game-tying moment when Travis Kelce took a direct snap and powered into the end zone on a goal-line play.

However, the touchdown was wiped out after officials flagged Kansas City for a facemask penalty, a ruling that drew instant frustration from the Chiefs’ sideline and stalled the drive.

As the teams returned from the break, Kansas City faced not only a deficit but a growing concern along the offensive line.

Early in the third quarter, the Chiefs announced that starting right guard Trey Smith had been ruled out for the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury. Smith had participated in the opening half but did not come back onto the field after halftime, with Mike Caliendo taking over at guard.

Smith had already appeared on the Week 12 injury report with a back issue, and the setback marked an immediate blow to a Kansas City line that had struggled at times to contain the Colts’ pressure. The veteran lineman had started all 10 games for the Chiefs this season and continued a streak of consistency that has defined his role since entering the league.

Losing Smith at this stage of the game complicates the Chiefs’ efforts to mount a comeback. His reliability in both pass protection and run blocking is central to maintaining stability in the pocket for Mahomes, especially against a Colts front that has generated steady pressure throughout the afternoon.

With Kansas City at 5-5 and pushing to stay alive in the AFC playoff race, Smith’s absence forces the offence to adjust on the fly and rely on depth at a critical juncture.
