Even if the Kansas City Chiefs desperately need Patrick Mahomes back on the field, they shouldn't let him play unless he's out of harm's way.
The former MVP has worked tirelessly in his recovery and has always aimed for a Week 1 return, though he didn't play in the preseason, and head coach Andy Reid has kept all info pretty close to his vest.
Then again, sometimes no news is good news. And, given the way the Chiefs have managed his reps and workload in training camp, it looks like he's trending in the right direction.
In an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Mahomes is more likely than not to suit up for the season opener.
“If you look at the workload he had in camp, he's been taking essentially all the first team reps,” Pelissero said. “He has looked from the people on the scene, like Patrick Mahomes. I believe that they'll be careful with some things, maybe in terms of exposing him in certain areas. But if he's on the field, he's out there not because they think he's 85 percent. No, he's all the way back, even if there's some things in terms of rust and maybe some calls they won't make while he gets his sea legs under him.”

Mahomes doesn't need to play in the preseason to get his legs under him, and there was no point in putting him at risk there.
That said, things will be much different when he has to play against the Denver Broncos' elite and overly physical defense in his first game after suffering the biggest injury of his career.
Justin Fields and Garrett Nussmeier would be the next in line if Mahomes has to miss some time, with the rookie looking particularly sharp in the preseason.
It's hard to imagine a scenario where Mahomes won't suit up to face the Broncos, but the Chiefs also have to protect him from himself if he's rushing the process.
This is just the beginning, and while everyone wants to get the season started on the right foot, they have to think about the big picture and the long grind ahead of them.
