Chiefs Bracing for WR Move After Trade News

After opening the 2026 NFL season 5-0, the Kansas City Chiefs have hit a rough patch and have suffered two straight losses, dropping them to 5-2. After their most recent collapse against the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs have fallen behind the Broncos in the race for first place in the AFC West. Heading into Week 9 against the New York Jets, Kansas City will look to get back on track.

The Chiefs’ wide receiver room has been a point of concern through the first half of the season. Injuries and inconsistent play have left the offensive skill group thin at many points this season. Now, with Tuesday’s trade deadline approaching, the Chiefs may look to add to this group of pass-catchers.

Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton will likely miss the remainder of the season after suffering a fractured ankle in Week 4 of the season. Rashee Rice has already missed time with a hamstring injury, and Xavier Worthy has struggled to generate any consistent production.

Kansas City’s interest in adding another receiver appears to remain active as the deadline approaches.

According to Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are among multiple teams that are continuing to make calls in search of receiver help.

While nothing has been finalized, the Chiefs have been linked to several options ahead of Tuesday. Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars has reportedly drawn interest from Kansas City, and Thomas played just 19 snaps in the victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Other names that have generated speculation are Josh Downs of the Indianapolis Colts and Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans. The Titans are reportedly asking for a late-round pick for Ridley, while Indianapolis has reportedly told teams they have already received an offer for Downs.

While Ridley may cost less to acquire, Downs has been the more productive playmaker as of late. If the Chiefs are willing to outbid the reported fourth-round offer Indianapolis has already received, Downs could make a big impact for the offense over the second half of the season.

With Tuesday’s deadline rapidly approaching, Kansas City will have to decide whether to stick with its current group or add weapons around Patrick Mahomes.
