The offensive line for the Kansas City Chiefs remains in flux, with right tackle Jawaan Taylor's placement on the Physically Unable to Play (PUP) list at the outset of training camp. However, the rest of the line is healthy and ready to go, which means fans can get a look at what a front five could resemble long-term in front of Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs unveiled an offensive line, left to right, of Josh Simmons at left tackle, Kingsley Suamataia at left guard, Creed Humphrey at center, Trey Smith at right guard, and Jaylon Moore at right tackle.
Simmons and Moore are new entrants into the offensive line picture this season. The Chiefs signed Moore to a two-year deal in free agency after he'd spent four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. They landed Simmons at the bottom of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft, at No. 32 overall following a minor trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Shifts in the offensive line were coming after a season in which the Chiefs leaned on four different players to man the left tackle position. The trade of longtime All-Pro guard Joe Thuney shook things up even more early in the spring, and the injury to Taylor allowed the team to envision other players in the role.
Going forward, the Chiefs already had center Creed Humphrey locked up at center for years to come, and shortly before camp began, they also locked up Trey Smith at right guard. However, every other position could potentially feature a new Week 1 starter in 2025.
There are some important takeaways here, including Simmons being healthy and ready to take reps at left tackle so quickly in camp. He spent the last several months recovering from a torn patellar tendon suffered midway through his final season at Ohio State.
Andy Reid said Simmons did some "good things" when asked by reporters, but hedged on expectations. "He did some good things. He worked in there with the ones. He did a nice job, I thought. He’s got things he’s gotta work on but he’ll keep doing that," said Reid.
Moore is an interesting sight at right tackle because it means the Chiefs are very interested in seeing how he looks on that side after initially penciling him in as a competitor on Mahomes' blindside. If Moore is a real option at right tackle, Taylor could find himself in a fight for his job after being entrenched as the starter outside for the last two seasons.
Suamataia is getting the first chances to impress at left guard, but he's not cemented there yet. The team is going to need to see how good he looks while staving off the likes of Hunter Nourzad and Mike Caliendo. Moore is also a potential option here, and the Chiefs are likely to see some players shifting roles in camp practices.
