Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs looked to end a two-game drought in Week 12 of the 2025 NFL season, returning to Arrowhead Stadium to host Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts. The Chiefs were coming off two close losses to different Super Bowl Contenders, including the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos.

With 4:38 remaining in the second quarter, Mahomes attempted a pass to tight end Robert Tonyan that fell incomplete. But after the former Texas Tech quarterback released the ball, Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart hit Mahomes and drove him to the ground with his full body weight. Officials threw a flag for roughing the passer, giving Kansas City 15 yards and a first down.

And on the Chiefs’ next possession, with just over 30 seconds remaining in the first half, another roughing the passer penalty was called on Indianapolis after defensive end Laiatu Latu hit Mahomes low after he released the ball, a pass that also fell incomplete. With Kansas City at the 12, the Chiefs were awarded six free yards and another first down.

With their illegal hits on Mahomes, both Tonyan and Latu can expect some fines coming their way. In the NFL, players can be fined up to $17,389 for a first roughing the passer offense, which can increase to $23,186 upon a second violation.

Through 11 weeks in the 2025 NFL season, the league has handed out 15 fines for roughing the passer for a total of $228,059. The most recent came in Week 11, when Bills defensive end Joey Bosa was charged $17,389 for his illegal hit on Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Following Week 12, Mahomes and the Chiefs will have a quick turnaround, facing the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13 on Thanksgiving.
