The Kansas City Chiefs selected SMU running back Brashard Smith with the 228th pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft after receiving the pick from the New England Patriots in a trade.
To make room for the rookie, the team cut one of their running backs that mainly stayed on their practice squad, veteran Keaontay Ingram.
He made an appearance in one game in his time with the Chiefs in 2024, but did not record a stat. As a result, the team did not seem to have much of an issue letting him go.
The team also announced that they were cutting former San Jose State receiver Justin Lockhart with an injury settlement.
Smith might not get a ton of snaps immediately with the Chiefs, but he can prove that he deserves more with the opportunities that he is given.
He had a very solid end to his college career, racking up 1,332 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground in his final year at SMU. He was also able to show his versatility and contribute in the passing game with 327 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chiefs had some needs at running back this past season, as starter Isiah Pacheco went down with a fractured fibula in Week 2. As a result, the team had to make due with what they had, and they eventually brought back Kareem Hunt to help fill the void.
Now Smith will be looking to provide the Chiefs with more depth at the running back position and make the most of it when he is given the ball.
