Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo using is using a proven formula from previous seasons with rookie defender

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has a tried-and-true formula that has worked throughout his coaching career.

During his six-year tenure in Kansas City, Spagnuolo has often slowly broken in rookie defenders early in the season, then increased their role down the stretch. We've seen it with players such as L'Jarius Sneed, Nick Bolton, Leo Chenal, Bryan Cook, and Jaylen Watson. Now, it's happening with rookie safety Jaden Hicks.

After averaging just three defensive snaps over his first six games, Hicks has averaged 15 during his last seven. He is coming off a season-high of 26 from last week's win over the Los Angeles Chargers, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo told the media on Thursday that he'll play even more during the Chiefs' remaining four games.

"I think Jaden has [increased his role] all year long," Spagnuolo said. "He was on special teams initially. We had him in there in dime, and now we've started to filter him in there a little bit more in base. And he had some rotations, and he'll probably get a few more plays this week. I like what he's doing. He's long, so he gives us something there. I think he's been a pretty good cover guy, and going back when I watched his film at Washington State, I thought he did a really good job at playing the ball and attacking the ball, and getting a couple of interceptions that he made. So, if we can get some of that, it'd be helpful."

The Chiefs have had excellent success at identifying talent at defensive back over the past several years. Showing them confidence and increasing their role and responsibilities as the season unfolds has been a successful strategy for Spagnuolo and the defensive coaching staff.

As Spagnuolo said, if Hicks can utilize his athleticism and help the defense create turnovers, it would make a big difference. The Chiefs are tied for the second-fewest number of turnovers forced on the season with just 10.  Hicks snagged his first career interception back in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.
