Chiefs expected to sign a risky, unproven player at the left tackle position just minutes into 2025 NFL legal tampering

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a risky move at the left tackle position.

According to multiple reports, the Chiefs are signing San Francisco 49ers LT Jaylon Moore on a two-year deal worth $30M. Moore was reportedly one of the team's top targets  after Ronnie Stanley re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

A former fifth-round pick out of Western Michigan in the 2021 NFL draft, Moore is largely unproven. The 6-foot-4 and 311-pound offensive lineman has appeared in 55 career games but started just 12. In 2024, he played 259 snaps at left tackle instead of Trent Williams, allowing 10 total pressures and one sack of Brock Purdy.

Here's a look at some of those snaps. . .

Moore spent several seasons at Western Michigan playing alongside the Chiefs' recently re-signed OG Mike Caliendo. This could mean the two players will be paired at the left tackle and left guard positions for the 2025 NFL season. At 27 years old, there's still a lot of upside here, and he could have his best playing days ahead of him.

Remember, deals agreed upon during the legal tampering period cannot be executed officially until the new league year begins on Wednesday.

What else does this mean for the Chiefs?

Moore isn't exactly the biggest or longest left tackle prospect, but coming over from Kyle Shanahan's system does suggest one thing. The Chiefs will likely emphasize much of what we saw during the 2024 NFL season on offense. That means getting the ball out fast in the quick passing game, using lots of motion, screens, and other means to play a ball-control offense, and getting the ball to their playmakers.

Will he fix Kansas City's problems at the left tackle position? That remains to be seen. If he does, he stands to benefit from only signing a two-year contract with the Chiefs. Kansas City can also move on rather quickly with $21.4M in contract guarantees.

The good news is that this is unlikely to be the last time the team invests in the position during the 2025 NFL offseason cycle. I still expect the team to invest in a player during the 2025 NFL draft.
