Chiefs fans won’t love this trade pitch that would hurt their defensive depth

When looking at the key members of the Kansas City Chiefs who will hit free agency next offseason, Joshua Williams definitely comes to mind. A fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Williams immediately showed his value to the team, appearing in every regular-season game and all three playoff games as well.

Williams has proven to be a solid depth piece for the Chiefs but he's in the final year of his contract and this could be as good a time as any to trade him. Considering the Miami Dolphins have a rough situation at cornerback (that got even worse with the injury to Kader Kohou), it makes sense that people migh think a Williams trade would be a good idea for K.C.

Seth Walder of ESPN proposed a trade between the Chiefs and Dolphins that would send Williams to Miami in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 draft. Walder discussed how bleak the Dolphins' cornerback situation is and how the Chiefs have depth to spare at the position.

"Williams is a depth corner for the Chiefs, who already have Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Kristian Fulton (signed in March) and Nohl Williams (2025 third-round pick). Joshua Williams, who is scheduled to make $3.2 million this year, was even left off ESPN's 53-man roster projection at the start of training camp."

Joshua Williams listed in hypothetical trade to Dolphins

This is just a hypothetical trade so, as of this writing at least, Williams is still in Kansas City and gearing up to be a big piece of this Chiefs secondary. Walder isn't wrong that the Chiefs have solid depth at the cornerback spot but all it takes is one injury for that not to be the case and with Kristian Fulton's injury history, keeping a strong depth piece around makes sense.

If this proposed trade could net the Chiefs something more than a late-round pick in 2027, maybe it'd be something to explore more but truthfully, keeping Williams even if just for one more year would probably be the better move.
