Over the weekend, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave the latest positive update on Patrick Mahomes as the star quarterback continues to recover from the torn ACL and torn LCL he suffered this past December.
During a Monday appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach revealed that Mahomes is "way ahead of schedule" at this stage of his rehab.
"I knew that this bump on the road wouldn't slow him down at all," Veach said about Mahomes, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "But I mean, this guy has been in the building -- especially like a player that has accomplished everything and can do anything he wants. He can hire his own trainers and be wherever he wants; he's in our building every single day. Even when he goes away for a few days, say, to Dallas for a weekend with his family, he takes one of our trainers with him."
It's no secret that Mahomes wants to return to the Kansas City lineup for the 2026 regular-season opener this coming September. While the Chiefs acquired Justin Fields as a potential lottery-ticket option at the position earlier in the offseason, it sounds like Mahomes is doing everything possible to ensure Fields will be a spectator when Week 1 arrives.
"He's way ahead of schedule," Veach added. "I think the biggest challenge that we're going to have is protecting him from himself. I'm sure when we get to St. Joseph, Missouri, for training camp, he's gonna want to be full go, but we are going to have to hold him back a little. And again, I don't want to put a timetable on it, but I think you guys know the type of person and competitor that Pat is. I would just say, we are in a really good place right now."
Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Chiefs OTAs are set to begin on May 26. What Mahomes is and/or isn't permitted to do during those sessions and during the club's mandatory minicamp (June 9-11) should give outsiders a better idea regarding whether or not he is truly on track to possibly play in September.
That said, Veach seems confident Mahomes will be good to go when meaningful games start back up.
