The Kansas City Chiefs are officially in St. Joseph, Missouri, at Missouri Western State University for their 2025 NFL training camp

Chiefs HC Andy Reid addressed the media as players and coaches arrived ahead of the team's first meeting on Monday, July 21. He provided media members with a brief update on the injury situation heading into training camp, starting with the players who would begin on the Active/PUP list.

Chiefs RT Jawaan Taylor, CB Kristian Fulton, and TE Tre Watson to start on the Active/PUP list

Surprisingly, second-year TE Jared Wiley, who is working his way back from an ACL injury, avoided the list. However, a starting offensive lineman and a projected starter at cornerback are among the three players who will be sidelined on the Active/PUP list, according to Reid.

"As far as any of the injuries go, I can update you real quick," Reid began. " PUP, the people that will start on PUP. (Kristian) Fulton will start on PUP, Jawaan Taylor, and Tre Watson. So, those three will start there. Everybody else is good to go."

Chiefs starting RT Jawaan Taylor, who had a knee procedure during the offseason after playing through a knee injury during the 2024 NFL season, will begin training camp on the PUP list. This opens the opportunity for the Chiefs' newest additions at offensive tackle to carve out a role for themselves, at least early on in training camp.

"Jawaan (Taylor) is out for the beginning of it," Reid said. "So we'll just flip those two guys (Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore) and they'll work in there, and we'll go from there. Andy (Heck) rotates all those guys anyway."

Reid emphasized that of the three heading to the Active/PUP list, Taylor is the closest to returning to the field.

"Yeah, well, we're hoping it's relatively fast," Reid said. "So I tell you, Jawaan (Taylor) is probably closer right now."

As for Kristian Fulton, one of the Chiefs' top free agent signings, he'd been limited due to an undisclosed knee injury throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamp. It's unclear when he could return to the field, but this will certainly hurt his chances of entering the starting lineup opposite Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie.

Tre Watson, a 2025 undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M, hasn't participated in a practice since the Chiefs' rookie minicamp. He's also dealing with an undisclosed injury. He's someone the team clearly likes, as they've kept him around and seem to have intentions of doing so through training camp, despite him not yet being ready to see the field.

What is the Active/PUP list, and when can players return to the field?

Players who are placed on the Active/PUP list at the onset of training camp will still count toward the 90-man offseason roster. They can still participate in team meetings and rehab work on the sidelines during practice. They can be removed from the list at any point during training camp, but they cannot be reinstated once removed.

Being on the Active/PUP list makes players eligible for the Reserve/PUP list during roster cuts. If a player is placed on the Reserve/PUP list during roster cuts, they won't initially count toward the 53-man roster. They won't be allowed to participate in practice, but can attend team meetings and do rehab work at the facility during the first four weeks of the season.

After four weeks, the Chiefs can open up a 21-day practice window, during which period they can activate players from the Reserve/PUP list to the 53-man roster at any time. If a player is not activated during the 21-day window, they'll be placed on the injured reserve list.
