The Kansas City Chiefs' Week 14 loss to the Houston Texans included a pair of notable injuries.
On the first offensive play of the game, Chiefs backup LT Wanya Morris suffered what the team described as a knee injury on a two-yard run from Isiah Pacheco to his side of the field. NBC Sports declined to replay the injury, which is never a good sign. Morris was helped off the field by the training staff, checked out briefly in the blue medical tent, then loaded onto a cart and taken back to the locker room. He was ruled out of the game before the end of the first quarter.
Next up, Chiefs All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie suffered a knee injury toward the end of the first quarter when attempting to defend Nico Collins on a 46-yard reception. After being helped off the field and tended to by the training staff, McDuffie was spotted jogging on the sideline. He was then seen wearing a brace on the injured knee, with his helmet on. It honestly looked as if he was going to try to return to the game, but he never did.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Andy Reid provided an update on the injury situation.
"Alright, got a couple injuries," Reid said. "Wanya Morris hurt his leg, lower leg. We'll just have to see within the next day or so here how he is. And then Trent McDuffie hyperextended his knee, so we'll have to see how it works out for him."
Morris, going from a knee injury to a lower-leg injury, doesn't sound particularly promising. He was spotted on crutches in the locker room after the game. For McDuffie, a hyperextended knee can have various outcomes depending on whether there are any accompanying ligament sprains and their severity. Needless to say, more testing will be done, and we'll know more soon.
The reality for the Chiefs' offensive tackle situation is that they're running out of depth. They were down to their third and fifth options in Week 14's loss to the Texans. It's very plausible that the upcoming Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers could see Esa Pole start at left tackle and Jaylon Moore at right tackle again. Andy Reid said on Friday that Trey Smith was closer to making his return in Week 14 than Jawaan Taylor was.
As for Trent McDuffie, his absence led to increased reps at outside cornerback for Nohl Williams. It also led to some snaps for Kevin Knowles II at the nickel corner spot, which was a new development and something the Chiefs hadn't really done since he was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. If McDuffie misses more time, you can realistically expect more of that. We could also possibly see Kristian Fulton active again after he was a healthy scratch for the past two games.
