Chiefs HC Andy Reid's decision to bench Wanya Morris all but confirms suspicion about future LT replacement
USA TODAY Sports

At one point during the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 13 win against the Las Vegas Raiders, Amazon's Sam Schwartzstein got on the horn for Amazon's Prime Vision broadcast and delivered a blunt message about the K.C.'s pass protection.

"If you want to attack the Chiefs' O-Line just target LT Wanya Morris," Schwartzstein said, before delivering a handful of painful stats about Morris surrendering pressures faster than any player on the field.

It was a bit of foreshadowing for Kansas City. Things got so bad by the end of Friday's game that Andy Reid went to the team's emergency backup plan at the left tackle position. They moved starting left guard Joe Thuney out to the left tackle spot and played their sixth man Mike Caliendo at left guard.

"Wanya [Morris] was struggling a little bit," Reid told reporters after the game. "So, moved Joe [Thuney] over there, [Mike] Caliendo in at guard. I thought it was the right thing to do at that time. [I] talked to Andy [Heck] about it, [and] he agreed with it, and so we made that move just to solidify things. Pat [Mahomes] took a few hits there, and so we were struggling at times."

The constant and excessive pressure got to be too much, impacting the team's ability to finish drives the way they wanted to.

"I would tell you that it's disruptive to any offense if the quarterback's getting hit and not able to get the ball off," Reid continued. "And so that can be a problem. Now, listen, he's playing against a couple of good players, but you've got to do better than what we did there."

Even Morris acknowledged his struggles to reporters in the locker room afterward and vowed to learn from them.

But the time for learning isn't on the field when you're competing for the No. 1 seed in the AFC conference. Morris was already on a short leash after the Chiefs signed free agent LT D.J. Humphries. A good performance in Week 13 could have prolonged the inevitable, but Humphries will be the starter at left tackle sooner rather than later after this game.

Humphries told reporters this past week that he'd be ready to go whenever the coaches said jump. That time could be Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers on "Sunday Night Football."

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was demonstrably upset multiple times due to the pressure he faced throughout the game. He was asked about the decision to bench Morris and made it clear that he trusts whoever the coaching staff decides to put out there whether it's Morris, Humphries, Thuney, or Kinglsey Suamataia.

"Whoever's out there, I trust those guys to go out there and make it happen," Mahomes told reporters. "I've seen those guys play, and they've played at high levels. And so, the coaches made a move, and the guys that came in did a good job. I've got to trust it. . ."

We'll learn in time if Humphries can be the solution the Chiefs so desperately need at the left tackle position. They'll have to trust for the time being that the veteran can stabilize a position lacking consistency deep into the 2024 NFL season.
