Chiefs' Isiah Pacheco unsung hero of offense vs. Bills

There's no doubt that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the superstar of the Kansas City Chiefs' offense. However, everyone, even Mahomes, needs a little help.

That has been especially true this season given the lackluster state of the Chiefs wide receiver corps. Enter second-year running back Isiah Pacheco, who has taken some pressure off of Mahomes and proved that the team can lean on him each week. Pacheco showed it again yesterday in K.C.'s divisional playoff round victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Pacheco racked up 111 total yards and a touchdown against the Bills, averaging 6.5 yards per carry along the way. He has racked up at least 85 rushing yards in five of his last seven games, breaking the 100-yard mark twice. Pacheco seems to play his best football during the most meaningful time of the year.

In addition to Pacheco's touchdown he scored on Sunday night, he was also crucial in setting up another. In the second quarter, he caught a 14-yard pass that gave the Chiefs a first and goal from the three-yard line, which they cashed in for a touchdown to star TE Travis Kelce.

After the game, Pacheco told Chiefs' play-by-play announcer Mitch Holthus that they ran that play earlier in the season with backup Jerick McKinnon. Sunday's game was the first time he has been asked to run that specific route.

"Coming in, knowing the situation, understanding that it had been run before and been seen." Pacheco said, "Allowing (me) to be patient and understanding that on the check-down to just be patient, catch it, see it and make it happen."

Pacheco would eventually close the game out with two runs which resulted in a first down and allowed the Chiefs to go to victory formation. He spoke about how practice makes perfect in those types of situations.

"Oh, that right there is big," Pacheco said. "Repping that in practice, knowing the situation. Understanding what we have to do in that situation is very important for us. Get the first down, win the game. Repetition leads to the practice. And that's where you execute it."

In a year that K.C.'s passing game isn't as explosive as it has been in the past, the emergence of Pacheco has saved the Chiefs' offense. It will need him to come up big again next week in the AFC Championship Game against a very good Baltimore Ravens defense. It also won't hurt to put together some long drives to keep the ball out of Lamar Jackson's hands.
