Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs had to dip into the free agency well after Week 2, following the injury to Isiah Pacheco, and that search led them to Kareem Hunt.
With no minicamp or training camp, Hunt was signed off the couch, and was put to work by Andy Reid to be the bellcow back as he rushed for 728 yards and seven touchdowns.
Not a speed burner, but a bruising runner, Hunt was the one whom the Chiefs relied on in short-yardage situations to keep the chains moving, and he did.
As such, for ESPN's Bill Barnwell, in naming luxury players in 2025, Hunt sees his name mentioned as the short-yardage back.
"Hunt wasn't great, but the one thing he did well was convert in short yardage," Barnwell wrote. "He went 15-of-18 (83.3%) in those situations, one year after he went 15-of-20 (75%) in those same spots for the Browns.
"Doing that for an offense that relied heavily on converting third downs and wasn't willing to run Patrick Mahomes on sneaks was a critical piece of the puzzle for Kansas City. With Pacheco back to full health and free agent Elijah Mitchell joining the mix, it would be a surprise if the Chiefs relied on Hunt in a featured role again in 2025. However, he could still be a useful third running back in the right situations."
Hunt likely won't see his 200+ carries from last year in 2025 with Pacheco back healthy and speed merchant Elijah Mitchell now in the building. But there will still be a place for this hammer to punish defenses when the Chiefs only need a couple of yards to keep the chains moving.
Kareem proved last season he can be the lead back if needed, but this upcoming season, the hope is that he won't need to be leaned on in such a way, and thus be fresher and more explosive.
However, when those short-yardage situations pop up, it will be Hunt's number that gets called.
