The Kansas City Chiefs endured a disappointing 2025 campaign when franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered season‑ending knee injuries that brought their season to an abrupt halt. Late in a December loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee, immediately ending his season and capping a rare year in which he missed the playoffs for the first time in his NFL career.

His injury came in a game that also eliminated Kansas City from contention, marking the first time Mahomes had not reached the postseason since becoming the starter. Mahomes finished the 2025 season with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, along with a career‑high 422 rushing yards and five rushing scores, before the injury ended his campaign.

Since undergoing successful surgery to repair both ligaments the day after the injury, Mahomes has been steadily progressing through rehabilitation with the Chiefs’ medical staff. Throughout the offseason he has publicly discussed his recovery goals, telling reporters that his aim is to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season and play without restrictions.

On Wednesday, Mahomes offered fans a hopeful glimpse into that progress by sharing a video of himself throwing a football while rehabbing. The update has since sparked optimism across Chiefs Kingdom about the timeline and his comfort level returning to action this fall.

While the organization continues to monitor his health closely, the Chiefs surprised fans on Thursday with a nostalgic throwback video. The 59-second clip featured Mahomes playing high school basketball and sparked several reactions from fans who were impressed by his highlight reel.

Mahomes was a multi‑sport standout at Whitehouse High School in Texas, excelling in football, basketball and baseball before committing to Texas Tech University to play college football. He posted prolific numbers in college and earned national attention as a dynamic athlete before the Chiefs selected him 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft

Since arriving in Kansas City, Mahomes has established himself as one of the game’s all‑time greats. He has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships, earning multiple MVP awards, and consistently ranking among the NFL’s best quarterbacks.

With his recovery on track and the franchise poised to make another run in 2026, Kansas City will be watching his progress closely as it seeks to return to championship status.
