The Kansas City Chiefs have found a quarterback to back up superstar Patrick Mahomes in the 2025 season, signing Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal in NFL free agency.
Minshew is heading to Kansas City after one year with the Las Vegas Raiders, a team he joined on a two-year deal worth $25 million last season. Las Vegas released the 28-year-old quarterback at the start of the new league year on Wednesday with a failed physical designation, per NBC Sports.
As Minshew joins the Chiefs, though, it creates some sort of conflict that several fans immediately noticed.
With the Raiders, and during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minshew wore jersey No. 15. Unfortunately for him, that is Mahomes' jersey number as well.
"Can’t believe Mahomes has to give up his #," former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert joked after the news of Minshew's signing with the Chiefs. He reposted the announcement from the NFL showing the former Raiders QB in jersey No. 15.
Another fan hilariously said, "Mahomes charging 15mill for that number."
"I wouldn’t put it past the greatest qb ever to give up his number and let Mahomes have it," a commenter added.

Sure enough, it's unlikely that Patrick Mahomes changes his jersey number for Gardner Minshew. Furthermore, it's worth noting that Minshew has worn a number of jersey numbers throughout his career.
During his time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, Minshew wore jersey No. 10. In college, he also wore No. 16 for the Washington State Cougars, as well as No. 5 for East Carolina University and Northwest Mississippi Community College.
With that said, while there might be a conflict with Mahomes and Minshew's current jersey numbers, the latter certainly has other options to choose from.
