Chiefs' Next Move Predicted After Looming Travis Kelce Decision

Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce contemplated retirement last offseason.

He ultimately decided to come back for his 13th season in the NFL after losing in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelce and the Chiefs haven't had the season in 2025 that they envisioned. Entering Week 18, they have lost five straight games and sit at 6-10.

It'll be the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era that they won't be in the playoffs. And to make matters worse, Mahomes has a long road ahead as he recovers from a torn ACL and LCL suffered in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

As for Kelce, he has been vocal about the year he's had. His stats are still some of the best in the game for a tight end, but he hasn't felt like himself.

Kelce was visibly emotional, too, before the Chiefs' final home game of the season on Christmas Day.

Only time will tell whether Kelce will retire from the NFL this offseason, but it is worth noting that several television personalities have weighed in on his decision.

On Friday, ESPN's Brooke Pryor said, "I do think that if Travis Kelce does indeed retire, this is an opportunity for this Chiefs organization to rebuild."

Pryor pointed to the high draft pick the Chiefs are likely to have in 2026.

"If I'm the Kansas City Chiefs, and really if I'm other teams looking at the Kansas City Chiefs, and they could have a pretty high draft pick, I'm thinking, gosh, this is the worst thing in the world, because Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have covered up a lot of deficits for this team," Pryor added. "They've had a patchwork wide receiver core for a while. Their offensive line was hurt. At this point, though, they have an opportunity to add with a fairly high draft pick. They can also move on from Jawan Taylor in the offseason and save $20 million, because at this point, they're about $50 million over the cap."

Pryor went on to say the turnover could be a good thing for Kansas City.

"And I think that the turnover that they could have is a good thing for the Chiefs," Pryor said. "And instead of trying to make an old thing work and be relevant year after year, and that's not to say that Travis Kelce doesn't work, but I think that this gives them an opportunity to start fresh. And really take a serious look at how they can better support Patrick Mahomes rather than just giving him a future Hall of Fame tight end."

When the Chiefs face the Raiders in Week 18, it could be the final game of Kelce's legendary career. Kickoff time is still to be determined.
