Kansas City Chiefs OT Jaylon Moore has a lot to be happy with after the Week 6 win over the Detroit Lions on "Sunday Night Football."
He notched his 13th career start and his first start in Kansas City just hours after his wife gave birth to their third child. He learned just this afternoon, during the team's walkthrough, that he'd be starting in the game on Sunday night due to Josh Simmons' absence. It wasn't something that they knew about in advance or had planned for, but something that came up rather quickly ahead of the game on Sunday.
"You stay ready, so you got to get ready," Moore quipped in the locker room after the game.
It proved to be a good mantra for Moore in the 30-17 win, but the biggest takeaway in the victory for No. 77 wasn't validation for what he already knew about preparation. It was about what comes next after proving himself under the bright lights.
"The biggest thing for me is earning the trust of my teammates and our coaching staff," Moore said. "Just to know, like, whenever my name, my number is called upon, I'll be ready."
Speaking to reporters in his postgame press conference, Chiefs HC Andy Reid praised Moore for his performance. He was also the one to reveal to reporters that Moore had that new dad strength to fall back on.
"Yeah, Jaylon (Moore) did a nice job," Reid said. "He just had a baby, too, which is a great thing. So last night or early this morning, however you want to put it. But he stepped in. Josh (Simmons) was gone for personal reasons. So, for him to step in was a nice thing, and I thought he did a nice job. And tribute to Andy (Heck) for rolling those guys during the week and getting that part done."
Patrick Mahomes found out about Simmons' absence at about the time that Moore learned he would be the starter on Sunday night.
"I mean, I didn't fully know," Mahomes said. "Obviously, we had a walkthrough around noon, whatever it was, and he wasn't there, so I knew something was up. And then talking with the coaches after, obviously, a personal matter, but I have all the faith in the world in Jaylon (Moore). I mean, he came here to do what he did today, go out there and go up against one of the premier pass rushers in the league and handle his own. And, so, that speaks to his professionalism. Getting better and better through work throughout the week and being prepared to play at any moment. And he went out there and showcased the type of player that he is."
Chiefs RG Trey Smith also felt that Moore proved himself while going against an outstanding player in Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson.
"The job he did today, just a consummate pro," Smith said in the locker room after the game. "Being able to go, at the time he did, and to help a job out there against a really good player. Shout out to Aiden Hutchison, he's a good player. And you know, a lot of looks at Jaylon got today, he did a great job."
Whether it's the coaches, the quarterback, or his fellow O-Linemen, the trust Moore earned in Week 6 will go far. Reid indicated to reporters after the game that he didn't know when Simmons would rejoin the team, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that Kansas City could find itself relying on Moore to start another game in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders. But whether it comes in Week 7 or months down the line, the Chiefs now know that Moore will be ready to rise to the occasion.
