Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes called shot before Super Bowl-winning drive

It turns out that even facing a deficit in overtime of a Super Bowl isn't enough to cause Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to lose his cool. 

As shared by Jason Reid of Andscape, Chiefs right guard Trey Smith revealed that Mahomes called his shot in the huddle shortly after the San Francisco 49ers took a 22-19 lead with 7:22 remaining in the first overtime period of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night. 

"We’re gonna go score, gentlemen," Smith said about Mahomes' message to teammates. "Just be great at your jobs, and let’s just go do it." 

Mahomes certainly was great at his job when his team needed him the most in front of a worldwide audience. Per Sean Gregory of Time and Jordan Mendoza of USA Today, the 28-year-old completed all eight of his pass attempts for 42 yards during the game's final drive, and Mahomes also contributed 27 rushing yards. He picked up eight yards with his legs on a fourth-and-one situation, completed a 13-yard pass on a third-and-six play and later scrambled for a 19-yard gain on a third-and-one. 

Even before Mahomes connected with wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a championship-clinching three-yard touchdown pass with three seconds remaining in the first extra frame, there was little doubt the signal-caller was about to claim his third Super Bowl ring and third Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award in four years. 

"At any point in the game [because of Mahomes], we’re in it," Smith explained. "When you have a Hall of Fame quarterback behind you, you don’t question what he does and the decisions he makes. If [there is] any chance he has an opportunity, he’s gonna make it go." 

Understandably, much has already been made about Mahomes trying to at least equal the five Super Bowl MVPs and seven championship rings accumulated by living legend Tom Brady. Mahomes is first concentrating on the Chiefs possibly becoming the only franchise, to date, to three-peat as Super Bowl champions, and he told reporters Monday those associated with the organization will "celebrate these next few weeks and then we'll get right back at it" this offseason. 

"When you think about [Mahomes’] leadership and his work ethic, the way he really builds competitors around him, through his examples and through his trust in them … he really transcends the position," Chiefs team president Mark Donovan said. "A lot of leaders are really good at leading from the front and saying, 'Do as I say. Follow my lead.' And he is a guy who does that. But he also says, 'OK. This is what we’re going to do together. And to do that, this is what I need you to do.'"
