Chiefs pay the price for criticizing NFL officiating
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and HC Andy Reid are officially paying the price for their postgame comments on NFL officiating following the Week 14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the NFL officially levied fines against Mahomes and Reid. Both the star quarterback and head coach were irate after the loss, taking issue with the officials ruling WR Kadarius Toney offside on what would have been a scoring play without having issued a customary warning

Toney lined up offside throughout the game and was not warned, nor was he penalized until it erased a go-ahead touchdown. There's also conflicting information on whether a warning was issued from referee Carl Cheffers and what the NFL has since told Toney about the penalty.

Alas, the NFL is still taking a stand and making an example of Mahomes and Reid. The league office reviewed comments from the pair, determining that they were substantial enough for a fine. It isn't uncommon for the NFL to fine coaches and players when they make remarks critical of league officiating. Mahomes' postgame reaction involving Bills QB Josh Allen was also assessed. It's unclear whether or not it played a role in the fines issued.

While the fine amounts are currently unknown, expectations are that the total amount against both Mahomes and Reid could exceed $75K.

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Reid was fined $100K and Mahomes was fined $50K.
