Arguably the biggest story for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason is whether or not Travis Kelce will play in 2025.
Kelce, 35, is getting to the end of his career, and though he still showed in 2024 that he's a quality player, the perennial All-Pro tight end showed some of his age in the Super Bowl. Kelce caught only four passes for 39 yards in the Chiefs' 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In this week's episode of his "New Heights" podcast with brother Jason, Kelce was candid about the choice that's ahead of him in the coming weeks.
"I know everybody wants to know whether I am playing next year and right now I am just kicking everything down the road. I am kicking every can I can down the road," Kelce said. "I am not making any crazy decisions, but right now the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches understanding there’s a lot that goes into this thing. I’ve been fortunate over the past five, six years, I’ve played more football than anybody.
"The fact that we keep going to these AFC Championships and Super Bowls, that means I’m playing an extra three games more than everybody else in the entire league. That’s a lot of wear and tear on your body. It’s a lot of time in the building. That process can be grueling. It can weigh on you. It can make you better and it can drive you crazy. Right now, it was one of those things where it was driving me crazy this year. It happens as you tail off towards the back nine of your career."
That certainly sounds like a guy who is considering hanging up his cleats, but time will tell. One of Kelce's teammates publicly called for him to come back and play on Thursday.
In an appearance on FS1's "The Facility," Kansas City defensive end Charles Omenihu said his message to Kelce would be “we, the whole organization, can’t go out like that," following the Super Bowl embarrassment.
He added that he thinks Kelce will wind up returning to the team for the 2025 season.
“I think Trav has a lot left, I think Trav is an extreme competitor, I think he’s somebody that loves the game,” Omenihu said. “I think in the storied career that he’s had, going out like that, in my opinion, wouldn’t be something that he would do. So, I believe that he’ll be back. I believe he’ll give it on more go."
Now, we wait to see if Omenihu was prescient, or if he was simply doing some wishful thinking.
The new league year begins on Wednesday, March 12. It seems likely that Kelce will have to give the Chiefs an answer before then so they know how to proceed the rest of the offseason.
