Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes continues to play out of his mind in September

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has a Super Bowl win and MVP under his belt, but the most astounding achievement of his career might be his sustained dominance in September.

Mahomes made quick work of the Cardinals on Sunday, finishing 30-of-39 for 360 yards and five touchdowns in a performance that only added onto his otherworldly career numbers in September.

In 14 September starts, Mahomes has thrown for 4,604 yards, 46 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has completed more than 70 percent of passes in more than half of his September starts.

Of those 14 starts, Mahomes has posted a passer rating higher than 115 in 11 of them. The league average passer rating was 90.8 last season.

Those totals would add up to one of the best individual seasons in NFL history over 17 games, let alone 14 games. Mahomes' career passer rating in September is 123.4. For comparison, Peyton Manning's passer rating when he threw a record 55 touchdown passes in 2013 was 115.1.

Mahomes is 12-2 in September starts, with both losses coming in 2021. Sunday's excellent start is reminiscent of the way Mahomes began his tenure as the Chiefs' starter in 2018, when he opened the season with 13 touchdowns and zero interceptions over three September starts.

The Chargers and Colts are next in Mahomes' path of destruction.
