Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs did not have the 2025 NFL season they were hoping for, finishing with a 6-11 record and missing the playoffs for the first time in his career. The quarterback also missed the final three games of the season after suffering a torn ACL, putting his availability for the start of the 2026 NFL season in jeopardy.

But while Patrick Mahomes continues his recovery from the serious knee injury, he has also stayed busy away from football. In fact, the former Texas Tech Red Raiders star has become a minority owner of several professional sports franchises, including the Kansas City Royals, Sporting Kansas City and the Alpine F1 Team.

And in January 2023, Mahomes expanded his sports portfolio event further, joining the ownership group of the Kansas City Current. The women's soccer club was founded in 2020 by Mahomes' wife, Brittany, along with former NFL defensive end Chris Long and his wife, Angie. The Chief star also became the first active NFL player to co-own a NWSL team.

And with just over two months to go before the start of the 2026 NWSL season, the Mahomes couple watched on as their club made a big trade, as the KC Current acquired midfielder Croix Bethune in a trade with the Washington Spirit, sending $100,000 in allocation funds and $900,000 in transfer threshold funds, marking the third-largest return in league history.

During her two seasons with the Spirit, Bethune has won both the NWSL Rookie and the Midfielder of the Year awards, along with spending time on the USA Women's National Team. But just before the Bethune trade, the KC Current also traded away defensive midfielder Claire Hutton to Bay FC for $1.1 million, the second-largest intralague trade in NWSL history.

"Adding to our relentless energy ⚡️ @CroixBethune knows it's teal time ️," the KC Current wrote on X.

Bethune also expressed her excitement for the trade to Kansas City, expressing her excitement to join Mahomes' team.

“It’s an honor to represent a club that exemplifies relentless energy, togetherness and a world-class commitment to elevating women’s sports," Bethune said. "It’s teal time, KC baby!”
