Some four months after stunningly getting blown out in Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs have been gearing up for an attempt to return to the top of the NFL.
They finished their mandatory minicamp on Thursday, and they, along with the league's other 31 teams, have roughly a month to go before the start of training camp. If nothing else, they should be healthier than they were during this past winter's playoffs once the 2025 season starts.
One notable player who is returning from an injury is wide receiver Rashee Rice, who seemed to be developing into a star before he injured his LCL and hamstring in Week 4 of 2024. He posted a photo of himself in uniform on his Instagram account with what appeared to be an emoji of a bishop chess piece in the caption.
The Chiefs organization responded to that post with the text "yeahhhhh" and a fire emoji.
Rice was drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2023 draft. At the time, they were coming off their second Super Bowl championship of the Patrick Mahomes era and were one year removed from trading away All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill.
There was hope that Rice could fill the void left by Hill's departure. As a rookie, he tallied 938 yards and seven touchdowns on 79 receptions as Kansas City won it all yet again.
With him making his way back from injury and speedster Xavier Worthy entering his second pro season, one has to assume that a reasonably healthy Kansas City team will at least be in the discussion for AFC supremacy once again this fall and winter.
Ever since Mahomes became the team's starting quarterback in 2018, it has reached at least the AFC Championship game each year.
