Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are in a bye week, giving him and the entire team a chance to recharge. It comes at a crucial time, as the Chiefs dropped to 5-4 with a 28-21 Week 9 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Mahomes had one of his worst games of his career, completing 15 of 34 passes for 250 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and a 57.2 passer rating. Kansas City sits in third place in the AFC West and is out of the playoff picture.

However, just because the Chiefs aren't playing doesn't mean the quarterback won't be surrounded by football. On Friday, Mahomes was announced as the guest picker for ESPN's "College GameDay."

"College GameDay" is setting up in Lubbock, Texas, for a Big 12 showdown between the No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) and the No. 7 BYU Cougars (8-0, 5-0). Each team is striving for a conference title and College Football Playoff appearance.

That means Mahomes is returning to his alma mater. He spent three seasons with the Red Raiders before being selected with the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by Kansas City.

The announcement even garnered a reaction from the Chiefs, who, in response to the "College GameDay" Instagram post commented three clock emojis.

That clock emoji has become somewhat of a signature for the six-time Pro Bowler. He recently used it to react to the Chiefs' final score post on Oct. 12 after defeating the Detroit Lions in Week 6.

Mahomes is no doubt hoping for a Texas Tech win, with ESPN BET placing the Red Raiders as 10.5-point favorites. Kickoff is noon ET, airing on ABC.

Whether his alma mater wins or loses, though, Mahomes' next NFL challenge is against the Denver Broncos on Nov. 16.
