The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a brutal loss in Super Bowl LIX, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles with a 40-22 final score.
This championship-game blowout marked a disappointing end to the Chiefs' campaign for a Super Bowl three-peat. Instead of making NFL history with their third consecutive title, the franchise is now looking to regroup heading into the 2025 season.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have played in five of the last six Super Bowl games, winning three. But, according to Sports Illustrated's Conner Orr, that trend is coming to an end.
Orr predicts the Chiefs to miss the Super Bowl in each of the next three seasons. The senior NFL writer alluded to gaps in the New England Patriots' dynasty as an explanation for his prediction.
“The Chiefs will miss the Super Bowl next season, and each of the next two seasons,” Orr said. “The (New England) Patriots had several gaps between Super Bowls amid their two-decade dynasty, and so will Kansas City.”
The Chiefs were shutdown by the Eagles' defense for much of Sunday's Super Bowl matchup. Each of Mahomes' three touchdowns and most of his passing yards came during garbage time as Philadelphia celebrated its title on the sideline.
Mahomes recorded just 33 yards and two interceptions on 6/14 passing in the first half. He finished the game with 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 21/31 passing.
“This isn’t an anti–Andy Reid or Patrick Mahomes take, but it is an acknowledgment that good players get old and great role players are difficult to keep around when there are so many clubs with deep pockets in free agency,” Orr continued. “Relief is on the way for those who would like to see some new blood in the big game.”
