Chiefs reportedly ready to make blockbuster move for All-Pro veteran

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Suffice to say, GM Brett Veach is hellbent on preventing that from happening again, and he'll leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of talent. That's why it's not much of a surprise to see that they might be in play to acquire 49ers veteran offensive lineman Trent Williams.

According to SportsBoom US NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the Chiefs will be Trent Williams' most aggressive suitor if he becomes available.

Chiefs want to make a run at Trent Williams

"Kansas City is seen by many around the league as the team most eager to land him and the one that would be the best fit," La Canfora wrote.

The Chiefs were one of the finalists to sign him as a free agent years ago. Now, with his cap hit just under $39 million, the 49ers are trying to get him to rework his contract. Williams has reportedly been adamant about doing so, and the Niners might consider releasing him if they can't reach an agreement.

The Chiefs have had a myriad of issues at left tackle, and even though he's 37 and has a history of neck injuries, Williams is still one of the prime blindside protectors in the game.

"The Chiefs have been churning through left tackles in recent years, coach Andy Reid has been comfortable going with stopgaps there in the past (Williams only has a few years left at this stage of his career) and the Chiefs recently released offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor," La Canfora added.

Patrick Mahomes is recovering from the first major injury of his career, and there will be no better way to protect him than signing a five-time All-Pro and arguably the best LT of his generation.
