Chiefs Restructure G Trey Smith’s Deal

Kansas City has restructured guard Trey Smith’s deal, as detailed by Over the Cap. $18.54MM of his 2026 base salary has been converted to a signing bonus. Smith’s cap charge for this season was lowered by $12.5MM as a result of the move.

The Chiefs now have $13.85MM in cap space as Week 1 approaches. That figure still ranks near the bottom of the NFL, but it will allow for maneuvering during the season. Smith’s cap hit for the coming campaign is now $12.14MM, but his charge for the remaining two years on his contract have increased to $34.17MM.

The two-time Pro Bowler’s base salary for 2027 ($23.25MM) is already guaranteed in full after it vested earlier this offseason. It would come as little surprise if another rework or a new extension were to be in store for next spring. At a minimum, team and player will no doubt look to finalize a third contract by 2028 with no locked-in money present for that season.

Smith, 27, received the franchise tag last year. Playing on the one-year tender would have made him the league’s highest-paid guard at the time but his long-term pact checked in at a slightly higher per-year figure ($23.5MM). The guard market moved to $24MM when Tyler Smith’s Cowboys extension was worked out, and it reached $25MM in average annual value thanks to Peter Skoronski’s new Titans deal. Smith sits in a tie for third at the position, and he will remain a foundational presence up front for the Chiefs in 2026 and beyond.
