Chiefs salary-cap expert expected to join Panthers front office
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to lose one of their top front office executives.

While the deal cannot technically be consummated until the playoffs conclude for Kansas City, the Carolina Panthers are expected to hire Chiefs VP of Football Ops Brandt Tilis for a high-ranking role in the front office. There he'll serve alongside new GM Dan Morgan as a sort of right-hand man. This shouldn't come as a surprise for A to Z Sports readers as we've been keeping close track of this news for the past few weeks

How close is this to being a done deal? Well, it's about as close as it could be without it being official. According to the MMQB's Albert Breer, Tilis has already cleaned out his office in Kansas City. Breer adds that he didn't attend the divisional round game against the Buffalo Bills and he also won't be attending the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The 2023 NFL season marked the 14th year that Tilis had been in Kansas City. He joined the team originally as a salary cap and contract analyst back in 2010. In 2014, he received his first promotion to Director of Salary Cap and Football Operations Analytics. He received a promotion to Director of Football Administration in 2017, before taking over in his VP of Football Ops role in 2021.

Tilis has a reputation as the team's salary cap and contract specialist, coming up with creative solutions to certain issues. He's worked very closely with Brett Veach on the salary cap side of roster building. He even played a pivotal role in crafting the unique 10-year deal that Patrick Mahomes signed back in 2020.

Look for some internal promotions this summer to help offset the loss here.
