The Kansas City Chiefs have added another piece to their defensive front, agreeing to terms with defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga on a three-year, $21 million contract that includes $14 million in guaranteed money, his agents David Canter and Ness Mugrabi of Aura Sports Group confirmed to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The deal is the latest chapter in a career that has taken several unexpected turns, and perhaps the most rewarding one yet for the 29-year-old.

From New England to Kansas City

Tonga spent the 2025 season with the New England Patriots on what most viewed as a low-risk flier contract. What happened next surprised a lot of people, including, perhaps, some in the league who had undervalued him.

He started eight of 17 games, finishing with 31 tackles, a sack, four quarterback hits and two pass breakups. More importantly, he became one of the more consistent interior pass rushers on a Patriots team that was still finding its identity under head coach Mike Vrabel. Tonga finished the season with the 18th-highest pass-rush grade among defensive tackles, per Pro Football Focus, and ranked inside the top 40 at his position overall.

Vrabel regularly praised him publicly. Those who watched practice described a player who came in early, stayed late, and never needed to be told twice. That kind of profile travels fast around the league.

Tonga also showed versatility that went beyond the defensive line. He lined up as a fullback in short-yardage situations, a detail that speaks to both his football IQ and his willingness to do whatever the team needed.

A Contract Extension That Almost Was

What makes this signing even more compelling is what almost happened before it.

According to sources, the Patriots and Tonga were close to agreeing on a contract extension back in December. Talks got deep enough that a deal seemed likely, but the two sides could not bridge the gap before negotiations fell apart near the finish line.

That breakdown, as frustrating as it may have felt at the time, ultimately worked in Tonga’s favor. He hit the open market, and what followed was a reminder of how quickly perceived value can shift. Initial projections had Tonga landing somewhere around $4 to $5 million per year. Instead, he secured $7 million per year from one of the most successful franchises in recent NFL history, with $14 million fully guaranteed.

For a player entering his age-29 season, that is a significant outcome.

What Tonga Brings to Kansas City

The Chiefs have consistently prioritized the defensive interior, and adding Tonga gives them another versatile, high-effort lineman capable of generating pressure from the inside.

His PFF pass-rush grade from 2025 is not a number that jumps off the page, but context matters. Tonga was doing that work in a Patriots system that was still installing itself. Now he walks into Kansas City, a franchise that has been to five Super Bowls since 2020 and knows exactly how to deploy interior linemen in a way that amplifies their strengths.

His ability to play as a fullback in short-yardage sets is also the kind of detail that does not show up in a box score but tends to matter a lot to a coaching staff. The Chiefs have always rewarded football intelligence, and Tonga appears to have that in abundance.

The Patriots Now Have a Hole to Fill

For New England, losing Tonga creates a real need along the defensive line. The Patriots still have Milton Williams and Christian Barmore as the top options at the position, but the depth behind them thins out quickly. Cory Durden, Joshua Farmer and Leonard Taylor III are among the candidates to absorb more responsibility, though none of them have Tonga’s track record at this point.

It is worth noting that Tonga’s departure is not a failure on the Patriots’ part, as much as it is a reflection of how free agency works. They tried to keep him. The market moved faster than expected, and a team with more cap flexibility swooped in.

The Bottom Line

Khyiris Tonga is heading to Kansas City on a deal that rewards a career year and sets him up for what could be a defining stretch of his professional life. For the Chiefs, it is another calculated addition to a roster built to compete now. For Tonga, it is proof that sometimes the deal that falls through ends up being the best thing that could have happened.
