The Kansas City Chiefs have added fresh depth to support Patrick Mahomes by signing wide receiver Xavier Loyd. The move comes after a strong tryout during the rookie minicamp, as the franchise looks to fix key offensive gaps.
Kansas City confirmed the signing on X, announcing Loyd alongside Marlen Sewell and Kahlil Benson. The team also waived Jake Haener, Ethan Hurkett, and Zacch Pickens to create roster space. The focus, however, stays on Loyd and his chance to break into a crowded receiving unit.
Loyd arrives as a local product from Blue Springs, Missouri, and brings a varied college journey. He played at Missouri Tigers (Mizzou) in 2025, a member institution of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), where he saw limited action with just two catches.
Loyd real impact came earlier at Illinois State Redbirds, posting 912 yards and six touchdowns in 2024. That season showed his reliable hands and sharp route running.

The Chiefs need that reliability after a difficult 2025-26 season. The team finished 6–11 (3rd in AFC West) and missed the playoffs for the first time in years.
Injuries to Mahomes and backup Gardner Minshew derailed the offense, while drops from Travis Kelce hurt drives. Suspensions and injuries also affected Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy.
Loyd now gets a real shot to earn a depth role and contribute on special teams. His size (1.88 m) and discipline could help stabilize a unit that lacked consistency last season.
Kansas City will hope this low-risk signing adds competition and gives Mahomes another dependable option moving forward.
