Every franchise has those names of players that aren't necessarily legends of the sport, but are legends of that team. For the Kansas City Chiefs, one of those guys has to be one of their former punters, Dustin Colquitt.
He played for the Chiefs for 15 years and was pretty good at what he did. It's not like it's some guy who just played his contract years and then dipped to another team. Colquitt was Kansas City, and in many ways, he still is. After his stint with the Chiefs, and boy was it a long one, he moved on to a handful of other teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons.
But his last time playing was in 2021. That was pretty much when he retired, but the Chiefs chose to throw him a ceremony of sorts on Wednesday.
"I've obviously been like done and retired and stuff, but it was something that they had always talked about," Colquitt told reporters one last time. "And I think every year, you know, they're pushing for championships, and I think there has to be a certain quota for things. And so I just hadn't worked out.
"I've been busy the last two years coaching at Tennessee on that special team staff with kickers and punters and snappers, holders like the whole, you know, quality control of that. So I just hadn't been able to make it back, whether it was to bang the drum or, like, do some philanthropy stuff. And so this just worked out, perfect timing. We had a couple of days off and got to see all my buddies again. It's fun."
One thing that I'm sure he didn't think he would get was a gift from his former special-teams coordinator, and the current STC of the Chiefs, Dave Toub. The two have been known to joke around together during their years together, and just share some really good laughs.
But, it appears that this time Toub got the last laugh.
Toub and the Chiefs' equipment crew got Colquitt a jersey with his name on the back. Well, not his name, but close to it. Toub delivered a Chiefs uniform with "Colquitter" on the back, because, you know, he's retiring.
It's all in good love. Those two have one of the best relationships between player and coordinator that you will see. And, let's be honest, it's pretty funny.
