The Kansas City Chiefs may be struggling this NFL season, going 5-5 through Week 11, but there's no denying that Travis Kelce is having quite a historic campaign.
Kelce has now recorded 50 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns. His fourth TD catch came against the Denver Broncos last Sunday, which allowed him to set a new Chiefs record for the most total touchdowns.
The 36-year-old tight end surpassed Chiefs icon Priest Holmes for the most touchdowns in team history, increasing his tally to 84. Holmes had 83 total TDs in his six years with the Kansas City franchise.
As Kelce talked about the record during the latest episode of his "New Heights" podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, he gave a shoutout to Holmes and mentioned "how much we [expletive] loved him when we were kids watching the game."
What stood out from Kelce's message, however, was his admission about Tony Gonzalez, who played for the Chiefs for 12 seasons from 1997 to 2008. As Kelce expressed his admiration for the players that paved the way for him, he opened up about Gonzalez's legacy and lasting impact on the organization.
"Obviously, Tony Gonzalez is a guy I still feel like I'm trying to fill his shoes and what he's been able to do in the National Football League and in this Chiefs organization," Kelce shared.
There’s no downplaying it, setting the Chiefs franchise touchdown record is a HUGE accomplishment

Gonzalez is widely considered the greatest tight end in NFL history, so it's not a surprise why Kelce feels like he has a lot more to do to catch up to him.
Gonzalez has the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history with 15,127 yards and is second among all TEs when it comes to total touchdowns with 111 — only behind Antonio Gates' 116 TDs.
While Kelce has long surpassed the NFL icon in the Chiefs' record books for receiving yards and total touchdowns, it's only natural for him to keep looking up to Gonzalez and try to be a dominant presence for the team.
The Chiefs could certainly use a motivated Kelce, especially amid their attempt to make the playoffs. Kansas City is currently out of the playoff picture at No. 9 in the AFC.
