Chiefs team captain helping promising young player be the best he can be on and off the field
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Not only is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes a star on the field, but he is also a leader in the locker room and his community.

Voluntary OTA offseason workouts began for the Chiefs on Monday, and among those in attendance was second year wide receiver Rashee Rice. It has been a troubling offseason for Rice, starting with a multi-vehicle wreck that he was involved in and faces charges for. He shortly followed that up with an altercation at a nightclub with a photographer, but he will not face charges for that incident.

Rice has not yet spoken to the media about the incidents, and probably won't for a while. However, other member of the Chiefs organization has, including Mahomes. Here's what Mahomes had to say when he was asked what conversations he has had with Rice up to this point.

“It’s not just me, just trying to do whatever we can to teach him (Rashee Rice) how to learn from his mistakes," Mahomes said. "Obviously, that was a big mistake, but you have to learn from it, make sure it doesn't happen again and try to do whatever you can to be the best person you can be in society. Not only for yourself but for the people around you. I think he is doing that, right now we’re just going to keep trying to do everything we can to get him on the right path so he can be a great football player obviously – but we want him to be a great person too.”

The final part of Mahomes' quote, getting Rice on the right bath so he can not only be a great football player but a great person as well, is the key statement. There are things bigger than football, and Rice seems to be at a crossroads in his life. If he can put this troubled offseason behind him and not get into anymore incidents, Rice will have a better quality of life and a heck of a football career.

If he doesn't, Rice will face stern consequences and could be left wondering "what if?" Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton recently issued some strong advice for Rice, stating that there is nobody that the NFL can do without. Hopefully with leaders such a Mahomes around, Rice gets back on track and goes on to do great things.
