The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their 2025 campaign with a 6-11 record, marking the first time in a decade that they failed to qualify for the playoffs. This underwhelming performance came to an end as their standout quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, sat out the final games to start rehabilitation on a torn ACL sustained during a Week 15 matchup.
As the team shifts focus to the upcoming offseason, attention has turned primarily to the future of longtime tight end Travis Kelce and whether he will choose to step away from the game.
In a recent installment of the “New Heights” podcast, co-hosted with his brother Jason, Kelce shared insights into his decision-making process and the physical factors that could influence a return for what would be his 14th year in the league.
“Every season ends for me and I put my feet up and just be a human,” Kelce said. “Just being a regular human for a couple weeks, maybe a month or so, and trying to figure out my future in football. I’ve talked to a few people in the facility already during exit meetings, and they know where I stand at least right now. There’s still a lot of love for the game there, and I don’t think I’ll lose that.“
“If my body can heal up, rest up, and I feel confident that I can go out there and give it another 18-to-21-week run, I think I’d do it in a heartbeat. Right now, it’s just about finding that answer and seeing how the body feels once everything settles down.”
Throughout the 2025 season, Kelce recorded 76 catches for 851 yards and five scores. These numbers represented an improvement in both yardage and touchdowns compared to his output from the prior year, demonstrating his ongoing effectiveness even at 36 years old.
Kelce’s resume speaks for itself, with little remaining to accomplish on the field. He stands as a champion in three Super Bowls and ranks among an elite group of just three tight ends who have eclipsed 13,000 yards receiving in their careers, alongside a host of other notable achievements in regular-season and playoff action.
Adding intrigue to the situation is Kelce’s impending status as an unrestricted free agent entering the offseason. Securing a fresh contract with Kansas City should not pose major hurdles if he opts to play another year, though significant personnel shifts may be on the horizon for a squad that ended the year well under .500.
The Chiefs’ struggles in 2025 were compounded by Mahomes’ serious knee injury, which occurred late in a contest against the Chargers and required immediate surgical intervention. His absence underscored the challenges that plagued the team throughout the year.
With playoff hopes dashed early and a subpar finish, Kansas City now faces critical choices in rebuilding momentum, starting with clarity on Kelce’s intentions as he takes time to recover and reflect.
