The Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line has been a big talking point all offseason, with many unsure of exactly how much the unit will improve.
After allowing 47 sacks last year (including playoffs), the Chiefs signed left tackle Jaylon Moore in free agency and drafted Josh Simmons in the first round to further bolster the position.
But Simmons is coming off a knee injury, so he's been a slow burn so far this offseason; however, in recent weeks, he has started to move with more authority, and veterans have taken notice.
Tight end Travis Kelce, in speaking on the New Heights podcast he does with brother Jason, gave a glowing review of Simmons in the early portion of the offseason workouts.
"I’ve seen him over there working some pass sets and things like that," Kelce said. "When you see the guy move, he is so balanced, and he is such a big athlete. He doesn’t seem he is ever top-heavy. His legs are strong, his feet are in the ground. He is very precise with his movements."
That is a glowing endorsement, and training camp will be key in seeing if Josh can continue on this trajectory.
Moore will likely get first crack at the left tackle spot, but Simmons isn't too far behind him, and in truth, we aren't completely ruling out the rookie being Patrick Mahomes' blindside protector come Week 1.
Of course, a lot would need to happen between now and then, but Simmons is ticking off every box in his rehab. Now, he has to do it when the pads come on.
If he does, and Andy Reid and the coaching staff have enough faith, Mahomes might have a rookie protecting him in 2025.
