When you have a three-time Super Bowl champion under center like the Kansas City Chiefs do with Patrick Mahomes, there is no need to reinvent the wheel each season heading into training camp.
But after the Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX in February, something had to change.
At Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University, Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy explained that to give his quarterback the reset he needs before the 2025 NFL season, they're treating Mahomes like a rookie again.
"We’ve gone back to a lot of the foundational stuff," Nagy said after Monday's practice. "Almost to like when (Mahomes) was a rookie again."
What does that mean? According to Nagy, they are focusing more on the simple things that every quarterback needs:
I can’t believe how much Patrick Mahomes sped up his drop so he wouldn’t under throw Xavier Worthy.

It may seem redundant to treat a quarterback with two NFL MVP awards and three Super Bowl MVPs like a rookie again, but the reality is that there are not a lot of new things the Chiefs can teach Mahomes in training camp.
"It’s important for us to stick to (the basics), but then also continue to never take away what he does so great," Nagy said. "I think you see it out here and what he’s doing in camp so far. It’s been really good.”
The 29-year-old is on board with the changes. "He embraces that," Nagy said. "He wants that."
Nagy revealed that a critical part of the staff’s role for the 2025 season is making sure that the disappointment that came with the embarrassing Super Bowl loss does not carry over into the new campaign — hence the new treatment for Mahomes.
Mahomes, who threw two backbreaking first-half interceptions against the Eagles and was sacked six times, described losing in the Super Bowl as "the worst thing in the world," but vowed to bounce back.

"I feel like I've had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk and I'm like, 'let's just play football and just handle it all out there,'" he told FanDuel TV's Kay Adams before training camp. "I don't really want to talk about it. I just want to go out and show who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs."
By getting back to the basics in July and August, Mahomes is putting in the work on the field to try to get the Chiefs back to the pinnacle next February.
