Chiefs veteran tryouts at rookie minicamp include an intriguing backfield option

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting four veteran players for tryouts during their rookie minicamp practices this weekend, including a former seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. 

Former Arizona Cardinals RB Eno Benjamin is listed among the team's four veteran tryouts. The former Arizona State star was a two-time 1,000-yard rusher in college, including a top-5 season in 2018. He spent three seasons with the Cardinals after being selected in the 2020 NFL draft. Arizona released him ahead of Week 12 of the 2022 NFL season.

Benjamin was claimed on waivers by the Texans, but he lasted just a month in Houston. He'd later be claimed by the New Orleans Saints, where he'd finish out the 2022 season. He suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture in practice ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

Listed at 5-foot-9 and 207 pounds, Benjamin has just 111 carries for 437 yards and three touchdowns in his career. Where he might have some real appeal for Kansas City is as a pass-catcher. He's caught 31 passes on 41 targets for 235 yards to this point of his NFL career. 

Chiefs trying out two veteran O-Linemen and one defensive back

Two tryout players are considered veterans by technicality alone. Former Pittsburgh OT Gabe Houy and former USC OL Brett Neilon both previously went undrafted and have never played for an NFL team during the regular season.

Houy signed with the Bears as a UDFA following the 2023 NFL draft, but he suffered a leg injury in the final preseason game and was waived/injured before reaching an injury settlement with the team. Neilon never caught on with a team after he suffered a leg injury late in the Pac-12 Championship Game vs. Utah. They're both trying out, hoping to earn an opportunity with Kansas City. 

Former Syracuse S Trill Williams is the final veteran tryout. He originally was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2021, but he was waived with a failed physical designation. He was claimed on waivers by the Miami Dolphins. Williams suffered a torn ACL in 2022 and did not play for a team during the 2023 NFL season.
