When the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Washington Commanders on "Monday Night Football," it'll be an exciting moment for one particular football family.
"My son coaches for the Commanders, for those who didn’t know," Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub told reporters on Thursday.
For the second time in his over two-decade NFL career, Toub will face off against the team that employs his son, Commanders offensive quality control coach Shane Toub. Most weeks, the two will pick up the phone and talk about the grind, but this week, it's radio silence until gameday.
"This is the only week we don’t talk," Dave told reporters on Thursday. "We’ve talked about this before. He (Commanders' Offensive Quality Control Coach Shane Toub) has been in the league now for seven years."
They'll surely exchange pleasantries before the game, but for four quarters on Monday night, they'll each be doing their best to ensure the other doesn't come away with a win.
The last time Dave faced off against Shane was during the 2019 NFL season when the Chiefs defeated the Bears 26-3 in December. Shane was an offensive assistant for Chicago at the time. This week will be extra special for the Toub family, no matter the outcome, because the entire family has come to town for the matchup.
"We went against him when he was in Chicago," Dave continued. "This is kind of cool, I mean, it’s always cool. My parents came into town last week, on Saturday, to see the last game, and they stayed all week to see this one too, to see Shane (Toub). It’s fun. It’s a cool thing."
While Dave's coaching career will undoubtedly be the most prominent part of his NFL legacy, Shane's continued rise through the league ranks is what he'll look back on most proudly.
A former offensive lineman at the University of Dayton, Shane has now held three different coaching titles in the NFL. He currently works with the Commanders' offensive line, and could one day be in line for a role as an offensive line coach in the NFL.
