The beginning of the 2025 NFL season has been an eventful one for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, and that trend seems to be continuing off the field as well.
On Thursday, ahead of Kansas City's Week 7 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Thornton announced that he signed an endorsement deal with Nike via a repost on his Instagram story. This will officially mark the first endorsement deal of the 25-year-old's NFL career.
"@t.thorn4on_ is officially @usnikefootball family — the next chapter of fast just got faster. #disruptive #sports #justdoit," Disruptive Sports wrote on Instagram.
The Baylor alum was drafted by the New England Patriots with the 50th pick in the second round in 2022.
During his time in New England, Thornton did show flashes of potential. In just his second career game, he caught four receptions on five targets for 37 yards and a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns. Additionally, he recorded 16 rushing yards and a touchdown on three attempts.
Unfortunately for Thornton, the rest of his time with the Patriots was forgettable. He only recorded one more touchdown for the rest of his three-season stint with the team, and he only caught a total of 39 receptions during that span.
The Patriots ultimately waived the Miami native in November 2024 before the Chiefs signed him to their practice squad. And, so far, this decision is leading to a career rejuvenation for him.
Through the first six weeks of his first full season in Kansas City, Thornton has recorded 13 receptions on 25 targets, 272 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, his 20.2 yards per reception currently lead the NFL.
After a career game against the New York Giants in Week 3, when he recorded five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, Thornton caught the attention of many players and fans across the league. This included star quarterback teammate Patrick Mahomes, who spoke highly of him and what he brought to the table after his performance (h/t KSHB 41 on YouTube).
"He'd come in and run some of those deeper routes, and I would throw to him a couple times last year, just to see what he had. And you could see that he had juice," Mahomes said about Thornton.
"Getting into OTAs, and then into training camp, he was one of those guys that was down there with me working in Texas. So I knew he was going to be a good football player, but he's even exceeding my expectations. He's stepping up whenever the opportunity has been provided for him."
It is clear that Thornton has a backing with the Chiefs, and this should only continue to pay dividends as he looks to further establish himself as a big-time contributor in the NFL.
With Rashee Rice set to make his return from his suspension in Week 7, it is likely that Thornton will take a backseat on the depth chart for now. Still, he made a good impression when the Chiefs needed him the most, and it would not be a surprise if he sticks around for the long haul.
