Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton recently returned to social media after nearly three years away, and he had a very valid reason for the hiatus.
Thornton has been an unexpected contributor in Kansas City's offense this season. He signed a practice-squad deal with the team after being cut by the New England Patriots midway through last season, and he is quickly gaining Patrick Mahomes' trust. Following a Week 3 performance in which he had five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, Thornton took to social media with a message for all those who had written him off.
"Thank you for all the hate & doubt!" Thornton wrote on X a day after the Chiefs beat the New York Giants 22-9.
The post was Thornton's first on X since Oct. 1, 2022, which was his rookie year with the Patriots
Thornton was asked on Wednesday about his decision to post on social media for the first time since 2022. He said he chose to stop paying attention to X and similar platforms when he was struggling in New England. Thornton grew tired of criticism from the media and fans.
"The media used to try to beat up on me a little bit bad," Thornton said. "I remember just not having the best game of my career, being a young player and going to Twitter and seeing the media just beating you up, beating you up, beating you up. ...If you're a young player, I'll give you that advice. If you're not doing well, don't look at Twitter at all."

After the Patriots drafted him out of Baylor in the second round in 2022, Thornton played in 13 games as a rookie. He caught just 22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He was all but phased out of the offense entirely after that and made minimal contributions in 2023 and 2024, which is when he was cut.
Through three games this season, Thornton has nine catches for 171 yards and has matched a career high with two touchdowns. The Chiefs needed a wideout to step up with Rashee Rice suspended and Xavier Worthy nursing an injury. Thornton has proven he is capable of filling the void.
If Thornton continues to play at a high level, the 25-year-old could maintain a role in the Chiefs' offense even when both Rice and Worthy are on the field.
