Chiefs WR on roster bubble is falling behind at training camp

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore is falling behind at training camp.

The fourth-year wide receiver entered training camp on the bubble to make the 53-man roster. He returned to practice on Sunday for the first time since he exited practice on Tuesday with a hamstring injury.

Unfortunately for Moore, he was only a limited participant at practice, taking part in stretch and individual drills.

Per Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, Moore is one of the receivers on the outside looking in for a spot on the 53-man roster. Receivers Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee are leading the charge for one of the final open positions.

"The Chiefs are expected to keep five receivers for sure: Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Jalen Royals," Sweeney wrote. "With that considered, there are realistically four other wideouts who could push for a role or two, depending upon Rice’s anticipated suspension.

"So far in training camp, both Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee have seen time with Mahomes, and they are making the most of their opportunities."

Following Sunday's practice, head coach Andy Reid complimented Thornton and Brownlee, as the two players have captured the notice of the coaching staff.

I think they’re doing a nice job,” Reid said. “You saw Brownlee with a couple of high balls there. Thornton’s doing a nice job too, likewise. So, both are big guys. Thornton is a runner, and Brownlee is a big, strong kid — little different styles, but both of them are good players.”

Moore has not been a good fit with Kansas City since the team selected him in the second round of the 2022 draft. The 24-year-old receiver has recorded 43 receptions for 494 yards and one touchdown during his time in the league.

Moore recorded no receptions in six appearances last season before the Chiefs placed him on injured reserve for a core muscle injury. The injury prompted Kansas City to trade for DeAndre Hopkins.

Moore doesn't have a prayer of making the team unless he gets back on the field and shows massive improvement during the preseason.
