The way things have gone this offseason, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is fortunate to still have a job.
The 24-year-old wideout made headlines in April when he reportedly fled the scene of a multi-vehicle wreck he partially caused and again in May after reportedly punching a photographer in a Dallas nightclub.
But now, Rice is adamant he’s learned from his mistakes, vowing to grow from the incidents and redeem himself in the court of public opinion.
“I've learned so much from (the offseason troubles),” Rice said, according to Fox 4’s P.J. Green. “All I can do is mature and continue to grow from that. This is a step in a better direction for me. Accidents and stuff like that happen, but all you can do is move forward and walk around being the same person, try to be positive so that everybody can feel your love and your great energy.”
Moments before the April wreck, Rice’s Lamborghini and a Corvette driven by SMU defensive back Teddy Knox collided on a Dallas highway which sent Rice’s vehicle careening into the median and striking another car, according to the police report.
Rice and Knox were both driving at speeds in excess of 115 mph moments before the crash, the report also states. Rice faces several charges from the incident, including one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.
Police confirmed that Rice won’t face charges from the May assault, but he is being sued by two of the alleged victims of the wreck for more than $1M in damages and $10M in punitive damages.
The 2023 second-round pick had a strong rookie season for the Chiefs, catching 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. He led all Chiefs receivers in targets (102), receptions, yards and touchdowns.
With Rice’s status for the 2024 season still unknown (he’ll likely face a suspension for the motor vehicle accident), the Chiefs used their 2024 first-round pick on a receiver, taking Texas’ Xavier Worthy 28th overall in April.
