Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster logged 57 receiving yards on three catches in Sunday’s 30-17 win against the Detroit Lions. The Pro Bowl wideout came second behind Travis Kelce, who registered a game-high 78 yards on six receptions as the Chiefs secured their third win of the NFL season.
It wasn’t Smith-Schuster’s performance that grabbed headlines after the game, though. The 28-year-old was involved in a massive postgame fight with Lions defensive back Brian Branch, which drew multiple players from both teams into the melee. As it turns out, Smith-Schuster has come out of the incident with a facial injury.
Based on the replays, it appears that Smith-Schuster had words for Branch after the final whistle, which could have something to do with the Lions star deciding to ignore Patrick Mahomes’ postgame handshake.
Branch clearly did not appreciate Smith-Schuster’s antics, and the former responded by taking a swing at the Chiefs WR. Smith-Schuster immediately rushed at Branch to retaliate, which ultimately ended in the wideout falling to the ground again, this time with his helmet removed. Players from both teams crowded around Smith-Schuster and Branch at that point, and it could no longer be seen what transpired between the two.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters after the game, and he announced that Smith-Schuster sustained “pretty good damage” on his nose from the fight.
“Well, you guys saw it," Reid said. "The guy (Branch) came up and hit JuJu for what looked like no reason, we’re taking a knee. So, that’s tough, but pretty good damage on JuJu’s nose.”
A video of the Chiefs wideout making his way to the locker room is currently making its rounds on social media. In it, Smith-Schuster can be seen covering his nose with a towel.

No further details have been provided about Smith-Schuster’s injury, but the way Reid described it makes it seem like this could be an issue for the former USC Trojans star moving forward. Depending on the extent of his injury, Smith-Schuster could potentially be in danger of missing some time.
The Chiefs are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 19, in a Week 7 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders at home. Smith-Schuster’s status for that game will be worth monitoring.
